Capacity building is core to the programme, and
we celebrated two PhD, eight MSc, and six BSc
students completing their research with us in
2022. There are 30 students still in training (22 PhD
and eight MSc), and it was particularly exciting
to see four new PhD students and three Masters
students from India, the Seychelles, Sri Lanka,
and La Reunion join the programme in 2022. As
part of our commitment to increase opportunities
for scientists from the Indian Ocean, we equip
scientists with broader skills, and this year saw
students participate in national and international
conferences, including a high-profile event for
the next generation of ocean leaders at the UN
Ocean Conference in June. This was organised in
partnership with the UN Decade of Ocean Science
for Sustainable Development which saw some of
our early career scientists share the conference
stage with established scientists and experts in
their field.
