During this year, the team conducted extensive fieldwork,
interviewing multi-day boat fishers, skippers and boat
owners from fishing communities, and consumers of
sharks and rays in Sri Lanka and India. An in-depth review
of fisheries monitoring, control and surveillance policies
in India was also undertaken. Some of the data have
already been used to produce scientific publications on
“Assessing Fishers’ Awareness and Perceptions of Shark
Fishing Regulations for Improved Fisheries Management”
and “Bridging Policy and Practice: A review of Monitoring,
Control, and Surveillance in Managing Illegal Fishing in
India” (both submitted to journals). Other papers are being
prepared on fishers’ perceived barriers and opportunities
to the adoption of vessel monitoring and automatic
identification systems, and modelling of consumer choice
for shark and ray consumption.
