Spotlight
Marine scientists underpin all our research and conservation
efforts. The Bertarelli Foundation’s Indian Ocean marine science
programme supports established researchers and has a major focus
on training the next generation of ocean scientists.
Since the programme began in 2017, we have trained a total of 108
students. 2024 was a big year for postgraduate finishers, with six
students completing their PhDs and with ten MSc and one BSc
graduates. Going into 2025, there are 22 students in the programme
(15 PhD, four MSc, and three BSc students). We continue to be
committed to regional capacity building, with seven current
students from the Indian Ocean region. Students were lead authors
on eleven of the scientific papers published this year, as well as
presenting at many national and international workshops and
conferences and participating in fieldwork.
